Courage in Action

Tuesday, March 12, 6:00 p.m.

Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Dorothy Height… These are just a few of the famous female crusaders in the national Civil Rights Movement. But what about the Civil Rights champions closer to home? Michigan Women Forward will share stories of some of the courageous Michigan women who fought for Civil Rights.

We will host the Historical Society Board and Annual Meeting before our education session on March 12 at 5:00 p.m.

A History of the Michigan Bulletin

For 25 years The Michigan Bulletin has been providing an alternative news source to Lansing area residents. Join the owner and general manager, Marcus Jefferson, to learn the history of the newspaper and some of the changes in Lansing the paper has been witness to over the years.

Waverly Park

Waverly Park, located on the north bank of the Grand River on the east side of Waverly Road, was for a time Lansing’s own version of Disneyland and a favorite destination of Lansingites during the late 1800’s. Join DTDL’s Tom Moore to learn more about this forgotten Lansing attraction.

ALL ABOARD!  Welcome to the Lansing Model Railroad Club (LMRC) and its Hogsback & Southern Railroad! THey are an established HO scale model railroad club and a 501(c)(3) non-profit tax-exempt educational organization.  The club is located in the former Grand Trunk Western Millett depot with a long history in Lansing, Michigan

One-Room School Houses of Eaton County

Tuesday, March 13, 6 p.m.

Learn about the Eaton County One-Room School Houses featured in the Eaton County Historical Commission’s new book, Rural Schools of Eaton County, MI. Led by Jan Sedore and Joe Ann Nehmer, a group of dedicated volunteers painstakingly scoured the corners of the county to find information about the current status of the buildings to early photos and student rolls. From attics to libraries and basements to barns they have scanned, copied and saved information that may have otherwise been lost.

Hmong Americans of Michigan

Tuesday, April 10, 6 p.m.

Author and historian, Martha Bloomfield will share the history of the Hmong people and their flight to America following the end of the Vietnam War. Come and learn about the history of the Hmong and the lives they established in Michigan, including a personal story from one Hmong American family.
